Crowds and timing
Dear Traveller, How to Visit a Popular Place More Gently
- Reading time
- 3 minutes

Dear Traveller,
Some places are popular for good reason. The Trevi Fountain, Dubrovnik's walls, Kyoto's temples. Telling people not to go is not realistic. But there are ways to visit more gently.
This letter is a practical one.

What we love
♥Early mornings
Arrive at opening, or before the tour buses. The light is better and the experience calmer.
♥Staying overnight
Day trippers concentrate crowds in the middle of the day. Staying overnight spreads the load and puts more money into the local economy.
♥Shoulder seasons
Spring and autumn often offer good weather with fewer visitors.
What we'd tell a friend
- Book ahead
- Timed tickets help sites manage crowds. Use them.
- Look nearby
- Often there is a less famous viewpoint or temple nearby that is equally beautiful.
- Use public transport
- It reduces congestion and parking pressure.
This is general guidance. Prices, timetables, opening hours and entry rules change, so please check the official sources below before you travel.
Handle with care
Follow local rules on photography, drones and access. Do not climb on monuments, and do not step off paths for a photo.
