Independent shops
Dear the Local Shopkeeper
- Reading time
- 3 minutes
Dear Shopkeeper,
This letter is for you, behind the counter. You open early, close late, and know your regulars by name.
In many tourist areas, shops like yours are disappearing, replaced by souvenir stores and chains. Rents rise and the neighbourhood changes.

What we love
♥The morning bakery
The first bread of the day is a ritual in many neighbourhoods.
♥The grocer
Fresh produce, local specialities and gossip.
♥The bookshop
Independent bookshops are places to find local writing and maps.

What we'd tell a friend
- How to help
- Buy your breakfast, your snacks and your souvenirs from independent shops. Say hello in the local language.
This is general guidance. Prices, timetables, opening hours and entry rules change, so please check the official sources below before you travel.
Handle with care
Do not use shops as free toilets or photo backdrops. Ask before photographing inside.
Dear Shopkeeper, thank you. We will be back for the bread.
With love,
The WTWL Team
