Dear Coyoacán, A Village Inside the City
- Reading time
- 3 minutes

Dear Coyoacán,
Inside one of the largest cities in the world, you feel like a small town. Cobbled streets, colonial churches, a plaza with a coyote fountain and families eating ice cream on a Sunday afternoon.
Your name comes from Nahuatl and is often translated as 'place of coyotes'. You were once a separate settlement, and you have kept much of that independent character.
This letter is about slowing down in a neighbourhood that rewards wandering.

What we love
♥Jardín Centenario
The central plaza with its coyote fountain is the heart of the neighbourhood. Weekends bring families, musicians and street vendors.
♥Casa Azul
The Frida Kahlo Museum, in the cobalt-blue house where she was born and died. Tickets must be booked in advance online.
♥Mercado de Coyoacán
The covered market is known for tostadas, fresh juices and local produce. Lively and busy at lunchtime.
♥Viveros de Coyoacán
A tree nursery and park popular with joggers, families and squirrels. Green, calm and very local.

What we'd tell a friend
- Getting there
- Metro stations such as Coyoacán and Viveros are a walk from the centre. Ride-hailing apps are common.
- How long
- Half a day to a full day, combined with nearby San Ángel.
- Weekends
- Weekends are lively and crowded; weekdays are calmer.
This is general guidance. Prices, timetables, opening hours and entry rules change, so please check the official sources below before you travel.
Handle with care
Coyoacán is a residential neighbourhood. Keep noise down in evening streets and support the small family businesses around the plazas.

Coyoacán, you are a village inside a megacity. We will come back for the churros, the coyotes and the Sunday music.
